EMMC L&D atatistics
Some statistics about EMMC L&D:

  • In the last month, there were 132 births, 36 c-sections (27%). Contrast with the national rate (23%) or Herbig's claim about the national rate (25%).
  • Of the 92 vaginal births, 72 had epidurals. (78%) Contrast with some rates I found for Canadian hospitals, 27.5% in 1998. That's the most comprehensive statistic I could find in a quick search.
  • ~20 (? I forget now) used vacuum extractors. EMMC does not use forceps.

I don't have statistics about how many used pitocin, had episiotomies, or were medically induced labors.

On the plus side, we are done with childbirth class. And I feel confident that I will be spending as much time as possible laboring at home.

I did my OB-GYN rotation last fall.

The numbers here (major Philly teaching hospital) were similar. I saw/assisted 15 deliveries. Except maybe the vaccum extraction number which seems high to me. I'd seen one used once (for a vaginal birth, plus a couple of times in C-sections) and forceps used once. And actually I think our epidural rates are higher. That bothers me, but it doesn't bother me as much as the way they were expected, rather than offered. Resident saying "And when you get to x cm you'll get your epidural." Patient saying "I HAVE to have one?" Resident looking confused. She did end up getting one, but several of my patients did not.

I would conjecture the pitocin number is at least 50%; it is at most US hospitals. We had a lot of inductions. I don't think I saw any episiotomies - one of my profs did the study to show that routine ones, rather than for a specific reason, are not actually a good idea. He brought this info to a local hosptial, and made the doctors document why they did one every single time they did. One of the docs cursed him out. But mostly they checked off "routine" on the checklist. After a few months, the rate went way down.
